CANOPUS PROJECT
GUIDELINES FOR DATA ACCESS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
October 11, 1991

+-------------------------------------------------+
The data supplied on diskette or over a network is the property
of the CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY. It is distributed to scientific
users under the condition that the Canadian Space Agency is
acknowledged in any use of the data, including all oral and
printed presentations.
+-------------------------------------------------+

The following is an extract of an internal CANOPUS Science Team document outlining the "rules-of-the-road" for the use and dissemination of CANOPUS data. The data you have been supplied with are subject to these conditions. Your use of these data implies your acceptance of these conditions.

Data is the property of the Canadian Space Agency.

DATA RELEASE OUTSIDE THE CANOPUS SCIENCE TEAM.

o Large scale or long term continuous commitments to share data outside the team requires approval of the Canadian Space Agency, the CANOPUS PI and the instrument teams concerned. Team leaders will be responsible for seeking the approval of their teams.

o Sharing of limited amounts of data in joint studies between team members and outside collaborators should be cleared with the appropriate team or teams through their leaders. The CANOPUS PI should be advised of such studies.

o Limited amounts of data may be released on a non-collaborative basis on the explicit understanding that the favor will be reciprocated at another time. Such releases should be cleared with the appropriate team or teams through their leaders. The CANOPUS PI should be advised of such studies.

o If the satisfaction of a data request is deemed to make unreasonable demands on the time of either CANOPUS scientists or their support staff, the request may be rejected. It is the responsibility of the CANOPUS science team member proposing to release data to determine if the operational impact of so doing is acceptable. For CANOTT, the operational acceptability of data releases will be decided by VAXCOM.

COAUTHORSHIP OF PAPERS BASED ON CANOPUS DATA.

o Collaboration with outsiders.

When CANOPUS data is to be used in collaboration with outside scientists, team members concerned with the instrument or instruments with which the data were obtained should be invited to participate and the team's or teams' advice should be sought (through their leaders) in the issuing of such invitations. All team members should be advised of the proposed collaboration.

o Acknowledgement of CSA.

All use of the data must acknowledge the support by the Canadian Space Agency.

RESOLUTION OF CONFLICTS.

Any disagreements with respect to these guidelines will be referred to the PI who will resolve them if necessary in consultation with the full science team.

SAMPLE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CSA.

The CANOPUS instrument array was constructed and is maintained and operated by the Canadian Space Agency for the Canadian scientific community.

DESCRIPTION OF CANOPUS DATA FILES:

The format of the files is ASCII.

MAGNETOMETER data records are constructed as follows:

Record 1: SITE,YEAR,DAY_OF_YEAR,HOUR,MINUTE,SECOND,SAMPINT,NPTS
Written under format: (1X,A4,4I5,2F5.2,I5)
Subsequent records: X(I),Y(I),Z(I) (I.e., 1 triplet per record)
Written under format: (*) (i.e., FORTRAN default for REAL*4)

Data Types:
Four-byte integer: YEAR,DAY_OF_YEAR,HOUR,MINUTE,NPTS
Four-byte floating point: SECONDS,SAMPINT,X,Y,Z
Character: SITE

Example:
GILL 89 276 0 0 1.00 5.0017280
9345.725 26.00000 60485.43 9345.725 25.97500
60485.35 9345.600 25.90000 60485.27 9345.550
... ... ...

"Bad" or missing data are written as 99999.90

RIOMETER data records are constructed as follows:

Record 1: SITE,YEAR,DAY_OF_YEAR,HOUR,MINUTE,SECOND,SAMPINT,NPTS
Written under format: (1X,A4,4I5,2F5.2,I5)
Subsequent records: RIO(I) (i.e., 1 value per record)
Written under format: (*) (i.e., FORTRAN default for REAL*4)

Data Types:
Four-byte integer: YEAR,DAY_OF_YEAR,HOUR,MINUTE,NPTS
Four-byte floating point: SECONDS,SAMPINT,X,Y,Z
Character: SITE

"Bad" or missing data are written as 99999.90

Riometer data, unless you are informed otherwise, are in dB. This is NOT quiet-day corrected data.

Please contact Dr. Don Wallis, (E-Mail: wallis@cannot.dan.sp-agency.ca) for more information regarding the riometer data.
