OV/NV/MgX/FeXII Full Sun Images, Aug 10 - 16, 1996

An example of one of the Whole Sun Month week's 4-quadrant observations taken by SUMER (Aug 10 - 16, 1996). Each of the four solar images in the composite correspond to a different height and temperature:

O V 630 A 2.00 x 10(5) K

N V 1238 A 2.5 x 10(5) K

Mg X 625 A 1.0 x 10(6) K

Fe XII 1242 A 1.5 to 2.0 x 10(6) K

Each of these solar images show the line plus underlying continuum intensity, so in the case of Fe XII, a large contribution of the disk images actually comes from the underlying continuum, and (in this case) Lyman-alpha wing intensity. However, above the limb, you only see Fe XII, and a very nice outline of the streamer/CH interface. The goal of the SUMER involvement in WSM was to study the polar CHs and the CH/streamer interface boundary, which was successfully accomplished. Also, for each pixel in each of these images, the full spectral profile is available.
