The solar acoustic oscillations are likely excited by turbulent convection in the surface layers of the Sun. The oscillation spectrum reflects both the depth at which this excitation occurs and the physical mechanism responsible. This lecture will discuss the known contributions to solar acoustic oscillation lineshapes and present a simplified excitation model that accounts for the observations.
