The STARE telescope has been successfully deployed on the island of
Tenerife
in the Canary Islands. This site was chosen for its improved atmospheric
conditions and to better facilitate network observations in cooperation with
similar programs at
Lowell Observatory and at
NASA/Ames. It should be noted that none of this would be
possible without the knowledge and collaboration of the
Instituto de
Astrofísica de Canarias.
Construction of the Dome
The new home of the STARE telescope is a 10.5' partially-automated
Ash dome.
During operation the dome is 'slaved' to the telescope mount. Both telescope
and dome are controlled by the software package "Point", developed at HAO by
A. Lecinski. CCD calibration and nightly field acquisition are now much
less time-consuming as to not over-burden already busy site operators.
