Distributed Data Access in a Virtual Observatory Environment

Accessing highly distributed scientific data within a virtual observatory that serves multiple, disparate scientific communities can seem a rather daunting task for data providers. Based on our experience within the Virtual Solar Terrestrial Observatory (VSTO) project as well as the Earth System Grid (ESG) project we have developed a highly extensible framework for accessing this data in the OPeNDAP Hyrax project. Within both of these projects we have been able to enhance the Back-End Server of Hyrax in order to provide the specific needs of the two different projects. In this presentation we will cover the overall design of the Back-End Server (BES) and the ease of extending the BES to meet your data access needs.
