[edit] Introduction
Virtual Observatories for the Geosciences in the Context of Data Stewardship
Abstract:
While the concept of a Virtual Observatory is relatively new, a variety of organizations and communities have been dealing with distributed data for a long time. A primary concern of most distributed systems is how to provide ready access to data while ensuring that the data are preserved for the long-term. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the institutions that historically have been involved with long-term data and information stewardship, how these have changed through time as technology has evolved, and discuss some of the problems faced by data managers. We describe a broad array of data stewardship issues, but we will focus on those that are particularly amenable to technological solutions or that are exacerbated when archives are geographically distributed.
