[edit] Introduction
AstroGrid: the UK Virtual Observatory
The AstroGrid project is funded by PPARC to provide virtual observatory (VO) infrastructure to the UK's astronomy, solar physics, and solar terrestrial physics communities. AstroGrid is a leading member of the Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA), a collaboration between VO projects based in 16 countries. IVOA working groups define XML standards that promote interoperability between data set access, analysis tools, remote storage, and resource discovery services made available by different VO's. Server-side AstroGrid modules allow data centres and application providers to expose these resources through web service interfaces, and then scientists can use the client-side 2007.1 release of the Workbench to rapidly search for data, build complex workflows, and load remotely stored data into desktop analysis tools. The HelioScope service, allowing access to a variety of Solar System data including solar images and heliospheric time series data, will be presented.
