Affiliate Scientist: Paul Cally
Paul Cally has been an HAO affiliate scientist since 1998. He is a professor of Solar Physics at Monash, Australia's largest university, and the director of research in the School of Mathematical Sciences.
Paul's research is in the field of solar physics and magnetohydrodynamics with particular emphasis on helioseismology, wave theory, and instabilities and related numerical techniques and physical processes. Some of his significant contributions include the development of leaky tube wave theory which is now relevant to the new coronal helioseismology observations, discovery of several tachocline magneto-shear instabilities, and many advances in our understanding of MHD mode conversion.
In recent years Paul's breadth of research has included tachocline instabilities as well as helioseismology, in particular the nonlinear evolution of axisymmetric flux tubes in the solar tachocline, multiple scattering of waves by a pair of gravitationally stratified flux tubes, magnetic and thermal phase shifts in the local helioseismology of sunspots and generalized ray theory.
Paul enjoys keeping fit in the gym, watching cricket and Australian football, and keeping one step ahead of his teenage sons. When he visits HAO, he likes to visit bookstores and the mountains.
