Affiliate Scientist: Jørgen Christensen-Dalsgaard

Jørgen Christensen-Dalsgaard, Affiliate Scientist Highlight

Jørgen Christensen-Dalsgaard has been an HAO affiliate scientist since 1998. He is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Aarhus University, Denmark, and head of the Danish Asteroseismology Center (DASC).

Jørgen's research is in solar and stellar structure and oscillations, with particular emphasis on the application of oscillation observations to helioseismology and asteroseismology. He pioneered the development of solar models for high-precision oscillation frequency calculations, suitable for helioseismology (his "Model S" is widely regarded as the standard solar model). He has also made major contributions to the development of inverse techniques in helioseismology and their application to ground-based and satellite data to learn about the solar interior.

In recent years, the focus of Jørgen's research has shifted increasingly to the application of asteroseismology to studying other stars. He is co-investigator on NASA's Kepler mission and directs the Kepler Asteroseismology Science Consortium (KASC) that comprises more than 450 scientists from all over the world. In addition he leads the Stellar Observations Network Group (SONG) project, to establish a global network of telescopes for asteroseismology and the study of extra-solar planets.

When visiting HAO, Jørgen likes to walk in the Colorado mountains, Mount Audubon and South Arapaho Peak being particular favorites, and to attend concerts at the Colorado Music Festival. He also takes the opportunity when he can to visit his daughter, grandkids, and son-in-law in Edmonton, Canada.
