1 "Anasazi" is actually a Navajo word meaning "ancient enemy". In recent years a move has been afoot to use instead the appellation "ancient Pueblo people" or "prehistoric Pueblo people". In what follows, to avoid overburdening the text with multiple meanings for "Pueblo" we retain "Anasazi" to refer to the ancient Pueblo people, use "modern Pueblo people" to refer to their descendants, and follow the established usage of "pueblo" (not capitalized) to refer to the multi-room masonry dwellings of both ancient and modern Pueblo people. We do this being fully aware that "pueblo" is a Spanish word meaning "village".
