Creating Apple IDs

Apple is moving away from updating their programs exclusively via the "Software Update" mechanism. They have started offering certain updates via the App Store (the blue round icon with a letter A - see figure below). Getting updates from the App Store requires one to have an Apple ID.

To Create an Apple ID:

  1. Open App Store (if it's not in Dock, it's in Applications).
  2. Under Quick Links on the right, select the "Sign In" link.
  3. Click "Create Apple ID" button.
  4. Click Continue, Accept the terms, Click Agree.
  5. Enter your UCAR email address, create a unique password, select security questions. Continue.
  6. Follow additional prompts until complete.

If you setup an account this manner, you should not have to provide a credit card.

Tip: It is best to have a personal Apple ID for personal use, and a UCAR Apple ID for UCAR use.

For UCAR systems, create a UCAR Apple ID that uses your UCAR email address and contains no credit card information, per the steps above.

If you download apps or music for personal use, create a separate personal Apple ID for downloading - and paying for - items downloaded onto your personally-owned equipment. This account will be linked to your personal credit card.

Keeping these accounts separate assists UCAR in complying with Apple's license agreements and product ownership. It will also keep your personal credit card separate from your UCAR account and UCAR-owned equipment.

If you have already created a personal Apple ID and used your UCAR email address as the contact, change your contact information to use a personal email account.
